(Sharecast News) - Wall Street trading got off to a mixed start on Friday as market participants continued to thumb over corporate earnings. The Dow opened 164.10 points lower on Friday, erasing gains recorded in the previous session.
Netflix earnings were in focus early on Friday after the streaming giant's Q3 earnings beat Wall Street estimates on both the top and bottom lines, while insurer Travelers beat quarterly profit estimates on underwriting strength, investment gains.
American Express quarterly profits exceeded expectations on the back of more disciplined cost control throughout the period and Procter & Gamble said Q1 sales had fallen short of expectations despite the group hiking prices.
On the macro front, US housing starts slipped 0.5% month-on-month to a reading of 1.35m in September, according to the Census Bureau, in line with market expectations. Elsewhere, building permits fell by a more-than-expected 2.9% to 1.42m in September, missing forecasts for a reading of 1.46m.
