US open: Dow Jones claws back some of yesterday's losses
(Sharecast News) - Wall Street trading got off to a mixed start on Wednesday as the Dow Jones tried to claw back some of the heavy losses recorded in the previous session. As of 1510 BST, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.45% at 42,932.30, while the S&P 500 advanced 0.05% to 5,818.23 and the Nasdaq Composite came out the gate 0.31% weaker at 18,258.33.
The Dow opened 191.88 points higher on Wednesday, bouncing back from the previous session's losses.
Wall Street trading looked set to continue to be somewhat volatile over the coming weeks, with market participants doing their best to navigate an already mixed Q3 earnings season, while also looking ahead to the US presidential election.
On the macro front for Wednesday, US mortgage applications fell by 17% in the week ended 11 October, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association of America, extending the prior week's 5.1% drop. Applications to refinance a mortgage plummeted 26%, while those to purchase a home were down 7% on the week.
Elsewhere, import prices decreased to 140.80 in September, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, down from a reading of 141.40 in August, while export prices fell from 147.90 to 146.80 last month.
In the corporate space, Morgan Stanley posted a 32% jump in Q3 earnings thanks to a better-than-expected investment banking performance, while Abbott Laboratories hiked its FY profit guidance on the back of solid medical device sales.
