US open: Strong start to holiday-shortened trading week
(Sharecast News) - Wall Street stocks were in the green early on Monday as the holiday-shortened trading week got underway. As of 1505 GMT, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.99% at 44,736.31, while the S&P 500 advanced 0.54% to 6,001.86 and the Nasdaq Composite came out the gate 0.44% firmer at 19,086.66.
The Dow opened 439.80 points higher on Monday, extending gains recorded in the previous session.
Stocks traded higher as sentiment got a boost from news that president-elect Donald Trump has tapped hedge fund manager Scott Bessent to take over as Treasury secretary, in line with the view that the new administration will zero in on boosting economic growth and cutting costs. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note fell to 4.301%, while its two-year counterpart dropped to 4.313%.
US markets will be closed on Thursday in observance of the Thanksgiving break and will also shut up shop early on Friday
On the macro front, the Chicago Federal Reserve's national activity index decreased to -0.40 in October, down from 0.27 in September and missing forecasts for a drop to -0.20. October's reading marked the lowest print in nine months.
In the corporate space, Macy's, Nordstrom, Best Buy, and Dell Technologies will all report earnings before the end of the week.
