Week ahead: US presidential debate, CPI in the spotlight

(Sharecast News) - The key risk event for financial markets over the coming week will be Tuesday's televised presidential election debate in the US between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. Polls were slightly in former of Harris heading into Tuesday but a strong showing for either candidate might yet conceivably tip the scales in favour of either one.

Next most important for investors would be the US consumer price report due out on Wednesday.

Consensus was for a very large three tenths of a percentage point decline in the annualised rate of increase for headline inflation to 2.6% in August.

Talk in markets was that it could decide whether the Federal Reserve went for a 25 or 50 basis point cut in interest rates on 18 September.

Next up, on Thursday the European Central Bank was expected to announce a further 25 basis point reduction in interest rates.

At the start of the week meanwhile, on Monday, investors would be on the lookout for the latest Chinese consumer price figures covering the month of August.

They would be followed the next day by a reading on Chinese foreign trade covering that same month.

On home shores, Tuesday would see the release of the July employment report.
