US open: Stocks lower as Q3 earnings, Treasury yields remain in focus
(Sharecast News) - Wall Street stocks were in the red early on Tuesday as Q3 earnings remained firmly in focus. As of 1525 BST, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.35% at 42,779.60, while the S&P 500 lost 0.30% to 5,836.66 and the Nasdaq Composite came out the gate 0.04% weaker at 18,533.15.
The Dow opened 152.00 points lower on Tuesday, extending losses recorded in the previous session as the blue-chip index snapped its winning streak at three sessions.
Treasury yields were drawing an amount of investor attention early on Tuesday, with the yield on the benchmark 10-year note sitting at 4.185% at the open after surging roughly twelve basis points in the previous session to 4.19%.
Tuesday's other primary focus will be Q3 earnings season, which will pick up some steam this week, with General Motors shares higher after the automotive giant reported a big profit beat and raised its full-year outlook, and 3M hiking the lower end of its FY adjusted profit guidance on the back of recovering demand in Q3.
Elsewhere, tobacco giant Philip Morris raised its full-year profit guidance on Tuesday on the back of strong Q3 sales of its Zyn and IQOS products in the US, while weapons manufacturer Lockheed Martin lifted FY profit and sales forecasts thanks to strong weapons demand during Q3.
On the macro front, the Richmond Fed's manufacturing index increased to -14 in October, up from a reading of -21 in September.
