US open: Stocks mixed as Q3 trading winds down
(Sharecast News) - Wall Street trading got off to a mixed start early on Monday after major indices managed to notch a third-straight winning week in what has historically been a rough month for stocks. As of 1500 BST, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.40% at 42,142.94, while the S&P 500 lost 0.15% to 5,729.80 and the Nasdaq Composite came out the gate 0.03% firmer at 18,125.79.
The Dow opened 170.06 points lower on Monday, reversing gains recorded in the penultimate session for both September and the third quarter.
On the macro front, the Chicago purchasing managers' index edged up to 46.6 in September, according to the Institute for Supply Management, up from 46.1 in August and ahead of expectation for a reading of 46.2,
Still to come, the Dallas Federal Reserve's manufacturing business index will follow at 1530 BST and Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell will deliver a speech at 1800 BST.
In the corporate space, shares in Jeep parent company Stellantis were down double-digits early on Monday after it warned of lower-than-expected sales "across most regions" in H2, dragging both General Motors and Ford down with it.
