US open: Stocks mixed following last week's heavy losses
(Sharecast News) - Wall Street trading got off to a mixed start on Monday after major indices turned in their worst weekly performance in two months last week. As of 1530 GMT, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.30% at 43,312.49, while the S&P 500 advanced 0.17% to 5,880.67 and the Nasdaq Composite came out the gate 0.46% firmer at 18,766.73.
The Dow opened 132.50 points lower on Monday, extending losses recorded in the previous session as the blue-chip's record-setting post-election rally came to a screeching halt last week.
In focus early on Monday, budget carrier Spirit Airlines filed for bankruptcy protection amid rising debt and consecutive losing quarters, while electric carmaker Tesla shares surged on the back of news that president-elect Donald Trump intends to relax regulation on self-driving vehicles.
Still to come, Nvidia, Palo Alto Networks, Walmart and Target will all report earnings before the end of the week.
On the macro front, the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo housing market index rose to 46 in November, up from 43 in October. November's print was the highest reading in seven months and above market expectations for a reading of 44. Current sales conditions rose by two points to 49, while sales expectations went up by seven points to 64.
