US open: Stocks skid into year-end
(Sharecast News) - Wall Street was trading lower at the end of the next-to-last week of 2024, albeit on holiday-thinned volumes.
Dragging on investor sentiment was the recent move higher in 10-year US Treasury note yields due to the perceived risk of higher inflation resulting from the uncertainty around the incoming Trump administration's policy proposals thus far.
As of 1631 BST, the Dow Jones Industrials was trading down by 0.76% to 42,996.65, whilst the S&P 500 was off by 1.13% at 5,969.03.
The Nasdaq Composite was 1.66% lower to 19,689.23 and the Russell 2000 index of small-cap stocks by 1.58% to 2,244.25.
Yields on the benchmark 10-year US Treasury meanwhile had come off its session highs and was only a tad higher at 4.60%, against a 52-week high of 4.741%.
Crude oil futures were moving modestly higher whilst the US dollar spot index was dipping slightly.
On the economic front on Friday, the US foreign trade shortfall on goods widened at a month-on-month pace of 4.7% in November to reach $102.9bn (consensus: $100.9bn).
Separately, the Department of Commerce reported that wholesale inventories fell by 0.2% over the month (consensus: 0.2%).
