FTSE 100 movers: Fresnillo shines on Centamin news; AstraZeneca falls

(Sharecast News) - London's FTSE 100 was down 0.6% at 8,220.75 in afternoon trade on Tuesday. Precious metals miner Fresnillo shone as FTSE 250 gold miner Centamin shot higher after it agreed to be taken over by AngloGold Ashanti in a £1.9bn deal.

Under the terms of the transaction, Centamin shareholders will receive 0.06983 new AngloGold Ashanti shares and $0.125 in cash. The price represents a premium of around 36.7% to the closing share price on Monday.

AstraZeneca was under the cosh, however, following mixed results from one of its key lung cancer trials.

Kathleen Brooks, research director at XTB, said the results "could make it difficult to get approval by the FDA in the US in the coming weeks".
