US open: Stocks mixed as investors look ahead to FOMC decision
(Sharecast News) - Major indices were mixed early on Monday as market participants looked ahead to the outcome of the Federal Reserve's two-day policy meeting later in the week. As of 1525 GMT, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.02% at 43,820.19, while the S&P 500 advanced 0.19% to 6,062.34 and the Nasdaq Composite came out the gate 0.39% firm at 20,004.91.
The Dow opened 7.87 points lower on Monday, modestly extending losses recorded in the previous session.
This week's primary focus will be the FOMC's monetary policy meeting on Wednesday, with market participants widely expecting to see the central bank cut its benchmark overnight interest rate by a further 25 basis points.
On the macro front for Monday, the New York Empire State manufacturing index fell to 0.20 in December, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, down from 31.2 in November and missing forecasts for a reading of 12. New orders and shipments increased modestly, while delivery times shortened slightly and supply availability was little changed.
Elsewhere, a preliminary reading of S&P Global's manufacturing PMI fell to 48.3 in December, down from 49.7 in November and well below market expectations for a reading of 48.9, while the services PMI rose to 58.5, up from 56.1 a month earlier and beating expectations for a drop to 55.7.
No major corporate earnings were slated for release on Monday.
